U.S. Patent Office Cancels Washington Redskins’ Trademarks


The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled six federal trademark registrations for the name of the Washington Redskins, ruling that the name is “disparaging to Native Americans” and thus cannot be trademarked under federal law that prohibits the protection of offensive or disparaging language.

The U.S. PTO’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board issued a ruling in the case, brought against the team by plaintiff Amanda Blackhorse, Wednesday morning.


Being a Cowboys fan I’ve always hated the Redskins and in a way it makes me smile to see this all going down but looking at it in an unbiased way, I think this is stupid. Why is it we as a society have decided that anytime anybody is offended by something it must immediately be deleted? Everything is going to offend somebody so are we eventually going to live in little individual bunkers to keep the bad stuff away?
